Abendvortrag: The Creed of Nicea between Medival Muslim Critiques an Arab Christian Responses - Prof. Bishasa Ebeid

Some medieval Muslim theologians considered the Council of Nicaea to be the root of the corruption of the Christian faith, arguing that it was there, under the influence of Emperor Constantine the Great, that the Trinitarian doctrine was invented—replacing the authentic monotheistic faith taught by Christ in his pure Gospel. In response to this challenge, Arab Christian theologians sought to defend both their Trinitarian and Christological doctrines, demonstrating that they were in harmony with the Gospels and that these doctrines were not invented at Nicaea.

This lecture aims to highlight key aspects of Muslim accusations and explore the various ways in which Arab Christian theologians and thinkers sought to address and refute them across different genres of Arabic Christian literature.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Bishara Ebeid ist Professor für Arabische Sprache und Literatur an der Universität Ca‘ Foscari in Venedig. Er promovierte in Orientalistik zum auf Arabisch geführten christologischen Dialog zwischen Melkiten, Kopten und Nestorianern im10. Jahrhundert und in Theologie zur apokryphen Literatur zu Pontius Pilatus. Spezialisiert auf christlich-arabische Theologie und Literatur hat er die kritische Ausgabe zweier Werke von Elias von Nisibis besorgt (Kommentar zum Glaubensbekenntnis [Tafsīr al-amānah al-kabīrah], Cordoba 2018 und Das Buch des Nachweises der Richtigkeit des Glaubens [Kitāb al-burhān 'alā ṣaḥīḥ al-īmān] Cordoba 2023, jeweils mit englischer Übersetzung).
